ACTIVITIES at Wolwedans/Sossusvelei
- Scenic Drives: Wolwedans provides the perfect base from which to explore vast stretches of undisturbed nature. Our personal and informative scenic drives in open Landrovers reveal the wonders of the wilderness. You will learn about small and large desert dwellers and their quest for survival in this harsh and unforgiving environment, and you’ll discover a diverse flora, ranging from resilient beauty to hardened survivor - not to mention NamibRand’s fascinating geology. Sundowner drives are of about 1-2 hours duration travelling about 10 km into the dunes where drinks will be served to enhance the wonderful sunsets. The return drive is in the dark and brings you back just in time for dinner. Morning or afternoon drives cover a distance of about 40-50 km and take 3-four hours. Afternoon scenic drives are often combined with sunset in the dunes. A day drive is a truly memorable excursion. Covering a distance of about 120 km it offers the highest degree of diversity as well as a better understanding of the dimensions of the NamibRand Conservancy. Also a delicious picnic lunch is served in the middle of nowhere! The day drive leaves after breakfast and returns approximately an hour before sunset. We aspire to make your stay at Wolwedans as personal and individual as possible. However there are certain constraints imposed by the NamibRand Reserve, which has ecological conservancy regulations. The number of vehicles are restricted – as well as the number of guests accommodated – which does not always allow us to offer exclusive drives. We will do our utmost to accommodate your wishes but we ask for your understanding if we are unable to.
- Scenic Flights: Scenic flights are a popular activity at Wolwedans. Commencing during the late afternoon, and giving you a birds-eye view of the Diamond Coast and Sossusvlei this is a truly exhilarating and once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you stay for two nights you can choose between Route A or B. For guest staying three nights or longer, Route C (which is a full day fly-in safari) provides a wonderful opportunity to visit some of Namibia’s attractions in the far South.
- Ballooning: A special attraction at NamibRand is hot-air ballooning. Soaring silently over the dune belts and never-ending plains provides unforgettable and breathtaking 360 degree vistas. From the best viewpoint imaginable, you admire the stark beauty of the Namib for about an hour, before celebrating this once in a lifetime experience with a champagne breakfast at the landing spot.
- Trekking Trails: TokTokkie Trails, a separate concession on the reserve and offers guided desert walking trails in the south-east of NamibRand.. The trail is two nights and can easily be integrated into a visit to Wolwedans (which then would make it a four-night stay). The pace of the trails is leisurely and set to suit guests from 10 to 70 years of age. Daily distances do not exceed 10 kilometers to ensure close-up viewing of the deserts intriguing flora and micro-fauna. Groups (which could also be exclusive) are limited to 8 in order to ensure personal attention. Like bushmen did for centuries, you will be traversing the expansive sand and gravel plains interspersed by stretches of golden grass Savannah, dunes and majestic mountain ranges. Two course dinners and drinks are served at the camp, so are picnic lunches in the shade of camel-thorn trees lining the dry river courses. Hot bucket-showers and comfortable, warm camp beds under a ceiling of stars provide a cosy retreat after a day's walk. This close to nature experience obviously requires a certain degree of physical fitness but should not exclude the older generation as elderly nature lovers have successfully managed the trail.
