THE ROYAL CAPE GOLF COURSE (10kms from Cape Town) (Back to the Top) ![]()
The Royal Cape Golf Club is the oldest golf course in South Africa. It was founded as early as 1885 by the British General Sir Henry Torrens, who had taken over the command of the troops at the Cape and immediately laid out a golf course in front of his military camp in Wynberg. It received the attribute "Royal" in 1910 by the Duke of Connaught, who represented King George V at the opening of the first parliament of the South African Union.
With lovely views of Table Mountain from most holes this championship course offers a beautiful setting that will make any visit here truly memorable.
Royal Cape Golf Club is a true championship course having hosted the South African Open no less than eleven times and the SA Amateur Championships eight times. The most recent SA Open held here was in 1996 and was won by Ernie Els. The selection of Royal Cape as the "Home of the Vodacom Players Championships" further underlines the championship status of the course.
The course today is a fine test of golf especially when the south-easter is blowing. Essentially it is a flat parkland course, well maintained and a pleasure to play with lovely views of the Table Mountain range. The fairways are narrow and tree-lined, demanding accuracy off the tees.
Wayward shots are penalised by trees and the greens are well bunkered. There is also plenty of water on the course, particularly at the corner of the 3rd and 4th and 5th holes and also at the 14th, 15th and 16th holes. The most difficult holes are the par 4 third, at 435m the longest two-shotter on the course, and the par 4 14th played into the teeth of the prevailing south-easter with water guarding the right of the green.

STELLENBOSCH GOLF COURSE - Stellenbosch (40kms from Cape Town) (Back to the Top) ![]()
One of the best golf courses in South Africa. This championship course which has hosted, among other tournaments, the South African Masters and South African Open, will test your golfing skills.
Stellenbosch lies in the centre of the fertile and very scenic winegrowing area of the Cape, less than an hour's drive out of Cape Town. With its numerous diligently restored buildings in the Cape Dutch style and its renowned university, it is one of the most attractive travel destinations at the Cape. Just as rewarding is a visit to the town's exclusive golf course situated just out of town amid vineyards.
The course is - compared to those in Cape Town and on the Cape Peninsula - well protected from the wind. The relatively narrow fairways are lined with trees. Hole 8 (par 4) requires for instance an absolutely straight stroke in order for the ball not to land in vines or bushes.
Worth mentioning is the professional driving range in Stellenbosch (with greens, bunkers and practice tees). At the Club House one can find a good restaurant and a very well stocked pro shop.

ERINVALE GOLF COURSE - Somerset West (50kms from Cape Town) (Back to the Top) ![]()
Erinvale Golf Club, nestled at the foothills of the Helderberg and Hottentot Holland Mountains, is one of South Africa's great golfing highlights. Situated near the grand historical Wine Estate of Vergelegen, Erinvale's breathtaking mountain and sea views are an integral part of this unforgettable golfing experience.
The course was host to the 1996 World Cup of Golf in which thirty two participating nations competed. This is an estate course of two distinctly different nines. The front nine is on the flat, winding between the many houses in this part of the estate, while the back nine climbs up the lower slopes of the magnificent Helderberg mountain, with breathtaking views of the coastline from the top holes.
Designed by Gary Player, Erinvale's beautifully manicured par 72 championship course boasts some of the country's most challenging and spectacular holes. Erinvale's demanding front nine meanders through park-like terrain, whilst the back nine provide a contrasting challenge winding its way through the foothills of the mountains with panoramic views of False Bay.
The greens at Erinvale are huge and well-shaped allowing for several different pin placements. A feature of the layout is that different coloured flags tell you the position of the pin, blue flags at the back, white in the middle and red at the front. Erinvale is also a real estate development where homes blend well into the landscape
The biggest test of nerve comes on the par-four 17th hole, the signature hole, a great hole that swoops downhill. You play from an elevated tee, with tall pines flanking one side of the fairway, and an out-of-bounds fence the other side.

FANCOURT GOLF COURSE - George (400kms from Cape Town) (Back to the Top) ![]()
Unique to South Africa, The Links golf course at Fancourt was officially opened in November 2000. Created from a previously flat piece of land, over 700 000 cubic metres of earth was moved in transforming it into a typical Links style. The course presents undulating windswept terrain and dune-style landscape and is the only such course in South Africa.
Every hole has received detailed attention to ensure that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards and shot values are in harmony. As a result, The Links presents a stern test in all weather conditions.
Set to test the best golfer in every way, The Links has some extraordinary holes, like the par-3 second, with its bunker in the heart of the enormous green. Gary Player, the course designer, said, "We included the bunker to break it up, but the front left of the green is severely sloped, so the golfer can use the contours to get the ball near the flag. You will never be stymied by the trap" Player added.
In a first for South Africa, the tees and fairways are a mix of four cool season grasses: Kentucky Blue, Rye, Fescue and Bent, with the greens a dominant Bent. These grasses allow for the traditional Pitch and Run shot to be played and also for the ball to 'chase' along the fairways.
The clubhouse at The Links is located only metres from the 18th green, with terraced areas and picture windows, to take maximum advantage of course and mountain views. All in all there is a very special atmosphere.
